Lo Scalandrino: The Name and Its Story

A Journey of Reinvention

Tucked into the rolling hills of Maremma, Lo Scalandrino will soon open its doors as an agriturismo crafted from passion, simplicity, and a shared dream. Here, guests will find organic olive groves, cosy apartments and rooms, as well as authentic Tuscan flavours—all nurtured by two people who left everything behind for a life rooted in this land.

Signore sulle scalandrino

Having decided to escape the relentless pace of Malta, my wife and I packed our lives into a few suitcases, and together, we moved from our country to Tuscany. Every sunrise over the olive trees reminded us why we chose this path: to slow down, rediscover wonder, and invite others to do the same.

The Simple Ladder That Inspired Us

Our name comes from a rustic wooden ladder—scalandrino—that farmers traditionally used to climb over hedges and fences. It wasn’t built to impress; it was built to endure. Weathered by seasons, it stood as a testament to resourcefulness and the unpretentious beauty of rural life.

Bridges Between Past and Present

To us, the scalandrino symbolizes more than a tool. It embodies

• the ingenuity of those who shaped this countryside

• the connections between generations who walked these fields

• the meeting point of our story and this remarkable land

Each guest, like the ladder’s climber, steps beyond familiar boundaries—bridging cultures, histories, and perspectives.

We invite our future guests to let the spirit of the scalandrino guide them; to pause atop our terraces, in the aromatic tapestry that is unique to our landscape, and look outward; to discover new views, forge unexpected connections, and carry home a fresh perspective. May our guests be inspired to climb higher in their own life—and to explore what lies just beyond the next hedge.
